The Ministry of Public Health is urgently implementing measures to help the disabled and prevent disabilities after finding that the number of disabled people in Thailand has a tendency to rise.
According to Public Health Minister MD Prasert Sinthawanarong, 1.3 million out of the 1.9 million disabled people nationwide, half of them with physical disabilities, have registered with the ministry for assistance. The three main causes of the disabilities included chronic diseases, accidents and ageing, the minister said.
The ministry’s plan to tackle the rising number of disabled people in the country is aimed at reducing accidents and curing chronic diseases. It has increased privileges for the disabled and allocated a budget of 56 million baht a year to buy disability aid and equipment.
The ministry has also set up more networks providing prosthetic, artificial limb, services, so that the disabled who live in remote areas have access to the ministry’s disability services.
