ASEAN Economic Community

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) among Thai people and the media’s roles in presenting truthful information.

In her statement at the recent 65th World Newspaper Congress in Bangkok, the Prime Minister put emphasis on promoting knowledge about the AEC from the grass roots level up and establishing understanding and cooperation in the region and even outside the ASEAN community.

She said that every rising conflict could be resolved through empathy, and she believed that regional growth would advance with dispatch if the majority of people agree on similar ideas and principles.

Since Thailand is in the transitional period into the AEC in 2015, Ms. Yingluck reiterated the urgency of raising the awareness about the integration through efforts by government units and community leaders.

Prime Minister Yingluck continued to say that Thailand and other nations in ASEAN are eager to become part of the AEC.

The unification is focused not only on linking borders with transport routes, but people of each nation are also being urged to learn of other cultures and be tolerant of their different backgrounds.

The media must be honest in presenting their information. And as far as technology is concerned, they ought to take advantage of a variety of media channels to effectively convey their messages.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said later that the successful integration of ASEAN countries will not only benefit a combined population of 600 million in terms of security and economy, but it will also promote the role of Asia on the global stage.
