Democrats facing defamation charges at Thai criminal court

Democrat Party spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut and deputy spokeswoman Mallika Boonmeetrakul have been indicted on charges of defaming Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra over comments relating to her private meeting with businessmen at the Four Seasons Hotel in February last year.

Prosecutors said Monday there was enough evidence to indict Chavanond and Mallika for libel. They claim that during party press conferences between February 15-21 last year, the pair accused Yingluck of skipping a House meeting and using official time to hold a secret meeting with a businessman at the hotel.

The defamation case against Chavanond and Mallika will be heard at the Criminal Court on Ratchadapisek Road on June 28.
