Bangkok Tops the List: Global Destination Cities Index

The Global Destination Cities Index released by MasterCard for the second quarter of 2013 puts Bangkok on the top of the list. The Asian city edged its way past London by a thin a margin on the basis of international visitor arrivals. An Asian city is topping the index for the first time after MasterCard introduced it in 2010.

Among the top 5 destination cities, Bangkok shows the highest growth in cross-border spending from 2010 to 2013 with 20 percent, 36 percent and 11.4 percent in 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively. Paris experienced severe volatility, but expects to recover to a decrease of 0.7% in 2013 from a decrease of 9.2 percent in 2012. Singapore experienced a continuous decline during the period, but it was more or less stable in the case of London and New York.
