Public Health Concerns and Clearing the Mess

Department of Disease Control chief Dr Pornthep Siriwanarangsan yesterday advised the public not to panic over the discovery that a toddler had died at a Bangkok hospital from an Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection.

1. Public health is always a public interest. The previous government under Abhisit didn’t instill confidence of the Thai community. Health infrastructure needs more than just housekeeping, it needs to be overhauled.

2. More initiatives are needed to raise basic health issues, especially among rural areas. It is not an easy feat, as Yingluck’s government must allocate the resources and empowerment to a population of over 65 million people and to clean the mess that Abhisit has left behind.
